New Westminster, BC – The City of New Westminster has cancelled the business licenses of a downtown pawn and jewellery shop following a hearing before City Council earlier today.

At the hearing, the New Westminster Police Service presented information gathered during a two-month undercover investigation into the activities of Vibe Jewellers and Pawn Ltd., located at 414 Columbia Street. Information provided included details of the business’ involvement in the purchase of scrap metal and other items the owners believed to be stolen.

In addition to submissions from New Westminster Police, Council heard from the city’s Manager of Licensing and Inspections and provided an opportunity to Vibe Jewellers and Pawn Ltd. owners to make a presentation.

After considering all information, Council concluded that the business owners had engaged in misconduct warranting the cancellation of their business licenses effective immediately. Under the Community Charter, a local government may cancel a business license for reasonable cause.

“New Westminster is well on the way to revitalizing our downtown core and transforming this area into a vibrant, safe and dynamic place for residents and where business can thrive,” said Mayor Wayne Wright. “The city will continue to be vigilant in dealing with any business that operates in a manner that creates nuisances and jeopardizes the livability of our city.”
