New Westminster – Renovation activity at Queensborough Community Centre is nearly complete and will be finished in time for 30th anniversary celebrations from June 27th – 29th. The centre will fully re-open to the public on Wednesday, June 25th.

“Queensborough Community Centre is somewhere where people meet people and really is the heart of this community,” said Renée Chadwick, Facility Manager. “When we had to close that was lost for a time and this place was deeply missed.”

The centre was closed on November 12, 2007 following a fire and temporary programs were moved to Queen Elizabeth Elementary School and Queensborough Middle School. While most of the facility was re-opened on February 14th this year, the main entrance and weight room remained closed for further renovation work.

“Our weight room is a great place for community members to pursue health and fitness and is a big draw, particularly for young adults,” said Chadwick. “People treat the centre like a member of the family and are very happy we will be fully operational again.”

Queensborough Community Centre’s 30th anniversary celebrations begin on Friday, June 27th with a family pizza dinner followed by a showing of the movie “Grease” on a 16 x 20 foot screen. Tickets are $6.50 for adults and $3.50 for kids and can be reserved by calling the centre at 604-525-7388.

Official re-opening festivities will get underway on Saturday, June 28th with a live band, games and crafts for the kids, Queensborough memorabilia over the years and cupcakes for everyone.

Celebrations wind-down on Sunday the 29th with a clean-up of Megan’s Place children’s area. There will be activities for kids and volunteers are welcome.

“Everyone is welcome at our 30th anniversary celebrations,” said Chadwick. “I encourage people to come down and experience for themselves what a great source of community pride Queensborough Community Centre has become.”
