New Westminster – The New Westminster Museum and Archives (NWMA) recently received Federal Government support through Library and Archives Canada to process a unique collection of files created by New Westminster’s historic newspaper, the Columbian.

The Columbian collection contains over 1200 files that include fascinating photographs and clippings of prominent community members, local events and city achievements. These intriguing stories appeared in the Columbian, and several other local newspapers published by the Columbian Company, predominately between the 1960s and early 1980s.

In 1983 the Columbian newspaper ceased operations. The 25th anniversary of the Columbian’s demise is an ideal time to make this collection known to the community, profiling its potential for celebrating New Westminster’s 150th birthday. The New Westminster Museum and Archives will soon complete processing this collection, thereby allowing public access to this valuable collection that documents newsworthy people and events of the period.

For more information call the NWMA at 604-527-4640. The New Westminster Museum and Archives, including Irving House, are located at 302 Royal Avenue and are open to the public 12:00 - 4:00 pm on Wednesdays to Sundays.
