New Westminster – After nearly two days of travel, four students from Lijiang, China arrived safely yesterday, beginning a two-month visit to the Royal City. The 15 and 16-year old students from New Westminster’s sister city were selected for the unique educational opportunity by city representatives during a recent trade mission to China. While in Canada, the students will attend classes at New Westminster Secondary School (NWSS).
“We are thrilled that they are finally here,” said Councillor Lorrie Williams, who was at the airport along with New Westminster Mayor Wayne Wright to officially welcome the students to Canada. “These girls have been given an opportunity that their families would never be able to afford on their own thanks to the generosity of community members, the Kiwanis Club of New Westminster and a sizable donation by a former NWSS student.”
All travel, accommodation, food and incidental costs for the students will be covered through donations.
While in New Westminster, Liu Rongning (Jennifer), Zi Chaoyuan (Laura), Lei Yongrong (Alice) and Mu Yingzhen (Angela) will be billeted with local families. In addition to their attendance at NWSS, the students will have lots of opportunities to participate in Canadian cultural activities through school clubs and extra-curricular programs.
“New Westminster is a beautiful city and everyone we have met has been so friendly,” said Jennifer Liu. “We are so grateful to have this chance to come and learn about our sister city and Canada. It is very exciting for us.”
