New Westminster – The City of New Westminster has been awarded a federal grant for $200,000 to support the Royal City’s 150th anniversary celebrations. The Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage grant was awarded by the Department of Canadian Heritage with the City’s application submitted in partnership with Tourism New Westminster.

“Working with local organizations, we’ve developed a program of promotions and activities that highlight New Westminster’s tremendous history while looking forward to the future,” said Rick Page, Celebrations Task Force Chair. “This funding will significantly offset 150th celebration costs as we make 2009 a year to remember in the Royal City.”

Earlier this year, City Council unanimously approved a budget of $374,000 to support the planning, development, marketing and promotion of New Westminster’s 150th anniversary celebrations. During their presentation to Council, city staff noted that grant funding would be pursued to reduce the amount required from City reserves for celebration activities.

“We’ve been told that we received the maximum grant available under this program,” said Page. “That’s entirely appropriate given our status as the oldest city in Western Canada and the first capital of British Columbia – we’ve got a lot to celebrate in New Westminster.”

Further information on the City’s celebrations can be found on the 150th anniversary website at www.newwest150.ca.
