Westminster Pier Park project team chosen to deliver latest jewel in the Royal City’s crown

New Westminster, BC – The City of New Westminster has selected the project team that will design and implement construction of Westminster Pier Park along a 500 metre section of former brownfield on the city’s waterfront. A contract for $2,500,000 has been awarded to the team of Worley Parsons Westmar.

“The team of consultants we’ve selected are among the best in the business,” said Mayor Wayne Wright. “This project is destined to become the latest jewel in The Royal City’s crown and we’re confident that our design and construction team will deliver that for us.”

The Westminster Pier Park design and construction team was selected following a Request for Proposal (RFP) process. The RFP was posted on BC Bid resulting in three proposals submitted and the selection of Worley Parsons Westmar as a result of their high score for combined design and environmental skills, experience and price. The team consists of:

  • Worley Parsons Westmar, a specialist in maritime, terminal, infrastructure and transportation
  • PWL Partnership Landscape Architects, a group with extensive experience planning and designing public and private spaces
  • Trow Associates, a geotechnical firm that will provide expertise in the assessment and management of risks posed by environmental factors including site remediation and regulatory/permitting requirements
  • G.L. Williams & Associates, specialists in near-shore estuarine and marine habitat biophysical survey, environmental assessment and design of compensatory mitigation
The design and construction team will work with MKT Arkle Development Management Inc. and Dugal Purdie, selected as Project Managers in December 2009 to deliver the new Westminster Pier Park on time and on budget.

“Mayor and Council have approved the selection of a multi-disciplinary team of experts that bring a wealth of knowledge on developing complex projects with aggressive timelines,” said Paul Daminato. “Design activity will commence immediately and residents and visitors alike will be able to see the new Westminster Pier Park taking shape in the coming months.”

The City of New Westminster purchased the former Westminster Pier site in March 2009 for $8 million. In September 2009, the City was awarded $16.6 million from the Government of Canada and Province of British Columbia through the Build Canada Fund, established to help BC communities meet their pressing infrastructure needs, stimulate the economy, create jobs and support continued economic growth. The Westminster Pier Park project is scheduled for completion in March 2011.
