2010 Environmental Poster Contest winners announced

New Westminster – New Westminster Mayor and Council were on hand last night as three local students were awarded prizes for their submissions to the 2010 Environmental Poster Contest. The City, in collaboration with School District #40 Student Services Department and GreenLearning Canada, supported the contest which allowed grades 5 and 6 students to express their environmentally-related learning experiences. In total, 132 entries were received from seven schools in the district.

The theme of this year’s poster contest was: “Sustainable Transportation: Now and in the Future”. Students were invited to create a poster that illustrated their personal commitment and/or vision on sustainable transportation in the future. Classes were encouraged to explore travelling by various modes and then to think critically on how to reduce energy use and move toward using more sustainable modes.

Joshua David of Lord Kelvin Elementary School won first place and received a Rocky Mountain Bike, partially sponsored by local business Race Face Performance Products. Taylor Johansen of F.W. Howay Elementary School won second prize and received a gift certificate from Cap’s Bicycle Shop. Third place went to Nina Lalic of Connaught Heights Elementary School. Nina received a gift certificate from Shoe Warehouse and a book of transit tickets. All winning artwork will be included into the City’s upcoming Master Transportation Plan.

“Once again, our local students have outdone themselves,” said Mayor Wayne Wright. “Both the quality of posters and number of submissions was impressive and it’s very clear that lots of effort and creativity went into each and every one.”

All poster contest submissions will be displayed in the main foyer of City Hall until next week.
