Youth Centre @ Moody Park selected as finalist for Kraft Celebration Tour 2010

New Westminster, BC – The new Youth Centre @ Moody Park has been selected as one of 20 finalists in the Kraft Celebration Tour, a national initiative launched by Kraft that will see 10 communities (one in each province) profiled on TSN’s SportsCentre broadcast along with $25,000 awarded to each of the 10 winners. Kraft will celebrate in each of the winning communities with a free community celebration during the month of August. The Youth Centre @ Moody Park project was nominated by local resident and Century House member Vance McFadyen.

“I saw an advertisement calling for entries into the Kraft Celebration Tour contest and thought the new Youth Centre @ Moody Park would be a perfect fit,” said McFadyen. “I completed a nomination form and lo and behold, we were chosen.”

Every weekday from July 12 to July 23, Canadians will decide the 10 winning tour stops via an intense 10 days of head-to-head online voting. At the end of a 24 hour period, the community receiving the most votes wins. New Westminster’s Youth Centre @ Moody Park will compete against a curling club project in Nelson, BC on July 23rd.  The winner in the New Westminster – Nelson contest will be announced on TSN’s SportsCentre on July 26th.

“This is fantastic news for the new Youth Centre @ Moody Park,” said Youth Facility Task Force member Jordie Knodell. “We’ve been working on our fundraising to furnish the new facility and the $25,000 prize would help us move closer to achieving our goal. Of course, getting a spotlight shone on the project and an opportunity to show-off New Westminster would be a huge bonus too!”

New Westminster residents and fans of the new Youth Centre @ Moody Park are encouraged to spread the word about the contest and online voting details. Information on when and how to vote online will be posted on the city website at www.newwestcity.ca. Voting rules for choosing the Top 10 Communities can be found here.

“While I’m happy to say it is an honour to be chosen as a finalist, I’d be over the moon if our Youth Centre @ Moody Park won this contest,” said Mayor Wayne Wright. “Nelson will be tough competition but the community spirit we have in New Westminster gives us the edge.”

The Kraft Celebration Tour allows for multiple voting during the 24 hour voting period.

“I’ll be asking everyone I know to vote for New Westminster on July 23rd,” said Mayor Wright. “It’s something I’ve never said before but I’m happy to say it now: vote early and vote often!”
