City breaks ground on expanded Queensborough Community Centre

New Westminster, BC – Queensborough community members, funding partner representatives and city officials were on hand at a groundbreaking ceremony today to officially launch the Queensborough Community Centre expansion project. The $7.67 million project will add over 13,000 square feet to the community centre to provide additional city services to local residents and refurbish the existing building’s exterior cladding and roof.

“This project will bring expanded services to residents of this special and growing part of New Westminster and really is a shining example of working to build our community together,” said Acting Mayor Bill Harper.

When complete, city services available under one roof to Queensborough residents include a licensed daycare, expanded weight room facilities, a library branch, police office space and multi use activity space for intergenerational programming.

The project has received $6.2 million in funding through the Development Assistance Compensation (DAC) agreement which was signed by the City, Province of BC, BC Lottery Corporation and Gateway Casinos and outlines the use of $65 million of gaming funding for five priority projects throughout New Westminster. In keeping with the City of New Westminster’s commitment to sustainability, the Queensborough Community Centre expansion will be constructed to LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Gold standards.

“Over the past year, city representatives have worked together with the community and numerous local organizations to provide guidance and develop a vision and design for this expansion,” said Acting Mayor Harper. “We value and appreciate all of the input received and our expansion plans are a reflection of this.”

Construction of the Queensborough Community Centre expansion will commence on July 25, 2011 with completion scheduled for Fall 2012.
