New Westminster – New Westminster Council has passed a resolution directing city staff to develop and implement plans for a temporary off-leash dog park. The park will be located on the former Doman property at the west end of the Esplanade in the City’s Quayside neighbourhood.

“Quayside and Downtown residents have been asking us to develop a place where they can exercise and socialize their dogs for some time,” said Mayor Wayne Wright. “The off-leash park will allow them to do just that while providing an additional amenity to the neighbourhood.”

While the plan is to construct a temporary off-leash facility, the City is committed to permanent park in this area dependant on planning and development of the overall site.

Funding for the off leash park is included in the City’s 2008 Capital Budget. The Council resolution provides for opportunities for third-party contributions to construction activity as well as added amenities for dogs and their owners. The anticipated opening of the new off leash facility is scheduled for early summer 2008.

The opening of the newest facility brings the number of off-leash options for New Westminster dog owners to six. Visit www.nwpr.bc.ca
