Star judges select song to hail the torch in New Westminster
New Westminster, BC – The New Westminster Torch Relay Celebration Committee, in partnership with the City of New Westminster and the School Alliance of Student Songwriters (SASS BC), is pleased to announce the winner of the first ever Song Search New West contest, a song writing and performing contest designed to inspire interest in the Torch Relay Community Celebration event in New Westminster, February 9th in Queen’s Park, at 10:00 am.
A panel of celebrity and music industry judges have selected the band The Knots as the contest winners. The Knots were chosen from among twenty nine other entries. Submissions included performers of various ages, the youngest being ten years old. Musical genres ranged from Country to Rap. All entries can be viewed at www.songsearchnewwest.com.
The Knots are a four piece high school aged band and will perform their original new song, This Royal City, at the New Westminster Torch Relay event on February 9 at 10:00 am. The Knots will also receive a full day recording session courtesy of Don McLeod, a song writer, music producer and co-founder of the School Alliance of Student Songwriters (SASS BC).
“We’re really excited about winning this contest. We saw so many great entries on Song Search New West and are really surprised we won,” said Jonny Schmidt, lead guitar player for The Knox. “To get to play at the Torch Relay event is so exciting. It’s definitely the biggest crowd we’ll ever have played for and it is just a great opportunity for our band,” said Jonny.
Four contestants were recognized with honourable mentions: Colin Grieve (Rocketship), Jeremy Rae (This City), ten year old Emma Ciprian (Miracles Will Happen), Roby Pamintuan and Kaye Historillo (City Where the Future Lives).
The judging panel consisted of three individuals: Kevin “Chief” Zaruk, of Chief Music Management, a former long-serving sound manager and now co-manager for the internationally successful rock band Nickleback; TV actor Graham Wardle, “Ty” on CBC’s Heartland; and Don McLeod, a New Westminster resident and co-founder of the School Alliance of Student Songwriters (SASS). Don has worked with well known writers and artists such as Jim Vallance (Bryan Adams, Aerosmith), Vincent De Giorgio (N*SYNC, Love Inc), and Brian Howes (Daughtry, Hinder, Hedley).
“The submissions were remarkable and great song writing skills were evident. As judges we found it difficult to identify a winner. We chose The Knots because their submission, This Royal City, will help people express the pride they feel in New Westminster at the Torch Relay celebration,” said Don McLeod.
“The emotional outpouring of pride in New Westminster through the songs of ordinary citizens has been tremendous,” said Jay Young, Chair, New Westminster Torch Relay Celebration Committee. “I was deeply impressed by the resourcefulness and talent of the many residents who took the time to memorialize our great community through their music. I encourage everyone to experience all the wonderful submissions at www.songsearchnewwest.com.”
