The City’s Transportation Goals and Objectives include:
Access
• Measure system performance in terms of the movement of goods and persons, not vehicles
• Increase attraction of non-auto modes
• Provide effective regional connections
• Maximize access to transit
• Provide bicycle routes and facilities
• Maximize pedestrian access and safety
• Ensure access to commercial areas
• Effectively allocate curb space
• Manage off-street parking
• Provide direct access for trucks
Quality of Transportation
• Maximize safety for all system users
• Enhance personal security throughout the system
• Provide weather protection for pedestrians
• Provide clear and consistent signage
Liveability
• Minimize all forms of transportation related pollution
• Enhance the quality of the street environment
• Maintain a road network hierarchy
• Work toward the principle of no new added road capacity for vehicles passing through the City
• Implement traffic management on local streets
• Enhance access for emergency vehicles
• Maintain an appropriate network of truck routes
• Encourage consolidation and improved safety of railways
Costs
• Favour travel modes that minimize resource consumption
• Maximize the potential of existing transportation investments
• Increase users’ share of transportation costs, and decrease taxpayers’ share
• Implement transportation improvements in phases
• Incorporate flexibility into transportation plans
