Update: High streamflow advisory over, boardwalk reopened

UPDATE: Friday, Aug. 9, 9:30 am

The boardwalk has been reopened, however, residents may still see additional debris in the Fraser River and should continue to exercise caution on the river and river bank.

UPDATE: Wednesday, Aug. 7, 5:00 pm

The high streamflow advisory has ended, however, the boardwalk will remain closed in case of additional debris. The closure will be reassessed on Friday morning.

UPDATE: Tuesday, Aug. 6, 9:00am

The boardwalk has been closed until further notice in response to the fast-moving water and expected debris in the Fraser River resulting from the landslide in the Chilcotin River on Wednesday. Please continue to exercise caution around the river as conditions may change suddenly. Boaters should also avoid the area if possible due to these safety concerns.

Flows are steady and are being monitored by air and land. Live photos and situation reports are being provided to the public here: https://chilcotin-river-landslide-2024-bcgov03.hub.arcgis.com/

UPDATE: Sunday, Aug. 4, 7:44pm

The Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship has kept the high streamflow advisory in place for the Fraser River downstream of Hope. The water at the landslide dam is nearing the top and is expected to move overtop of the blockage late Sunday or early Monday, Aug. 5.

There is currently no threat of flooding in New Westminster, however, we will see fast moving water on the river, with lots of debris.

Further updates will be provided as they become available.

The BC River Forecast Centre has issued a High Streamflow Advisory for the Fraser River downstream of Hope due to the landslide on the Chilcotin River. Please use caution near rivers, especially with children and pets, as sudden rising water levels could have strong current and could destabilize riverbanks.
