City Hall cannon restoration

The two cannons located near the cenotaph at City Hall are due for restoration work. These cannons were retired from service in 1895 and displayed in various locations around the city over the past century. The last restoration was conducted from 2000 to 2004, after which they were moved to the newly constructed cenotaph plaza.

Out of consideration for public safety, the cannons will be removed in the coming weeks (late October or early November) and placed into secured storage until they can be restored. Preparation work for moving the cannons will begin the week of October 14. Once the restoration work is completed, the cannons will be returned to the cenotaph. There is no timeframe yet for when restoration will be completed. City staff are currently working with the Royal Westminster Regiment Historical Society on determining the best option for restoration. The proposed course of action will be presented to City Council and Regimental leadership for review before proceeding.

Organizations interested in supporting this restoration work should contact the New Westminster Museum at or 604-527-4640.
