Kismet in Concert Style

The New Westminster Symphony continues the celebration of its 75th consecutive year of concerts by teaming up with Royal City Musical Theatre to present Kismet in Concert Style. This is a one-time only production of the Tony Award winning Best Musical of 1954 on its 65th anniversary; one of the most renowned musicals to grace the Broadway stages. Based on the melodic melodies of famed Russian composer Alexander Borodin it produced such well-loved standards as Stranger in Paradise, Baubles, Bangles and Beads and This is My Beloved that went on to be recorded as popular hits for artists such as Tony Bennett and Peggy Lee. Kismet takes place during the time of Aladdin and Sinbad and follows the exploits of a destitute beggar known as The Poet over the course of one magical day during which he has to rely on his wits and kismet - or fate as we know it - to make a fortune, save his hand and even his head from being lopped off, romance the evil Wazir's wife, and see his lovely daughter Marsinah married off to the handsome Caliph. All in a day's work and done with a wry sense of humour. RCMT's Artistic Director Valerie Easton has assembled a stellar cast of performers that will bring this Broadway classic to life on the stage of the Massey Theatre, supported by a symphony orchestra of nearly 40 musicians under the direction of NWSO Conductor Jin Zhang. This is the first time that the two pre-eminent, resident companies at the Massey Theatre have collaborated on a project of this magnitude and it promises to be memorable, so bring your magic carpet with you and prepare to take a ride to an exotic setting you won't soon forget.
