National Indigenous Peoples Day is going virtual this year.
The event will take place over two days on June 20th and the 21st.
Beginning at 2:00 pm on the 20th, Savage Society and the Arts Council of New Westminster will be hosting a virtual Hand Game Tournament. This is a traditional game played together by many Indigenous peoples across the continent, often during powwows. Due to social distancing, the tournament will take place via Zoom and it will be viewable to audiences everywhere on Facebook Live via the Savage Society Facebook page. The tournament will continue until 9:00 pm before picking up again at 4:00 pm on Sunday the 21st.
Throughout the tournament cultural performances and teachings will be presented by Spirit of the Children and Savage Production Societies. Additionally, Ernie Cardinal will be presenting a Medicine Wheel teaching at 4:00 pm on Sunday following greetings from Chief Rhonda Larrabee.
All games, teachings and performances will be viewable via the All My Relations Event on the Savage Society’s Facebook page.
