Family Day Weekend Adventure

Piece together a Family Day weekend adventure using the tools, inspiration and activities we provide. Suggested activities will provide a fun opportunity for families to create, discover, get active and try something new!  There is something for families of all shapes and sizes, and best of all everything is free!

Please note: Until further notice, gatherings or socials of any kind are not permitted. Activities  should also be done virtually or with your immediate household or core bubble. Non-essential travel to New Westminster is also not recommended right now.


A Virtual Frozen Adventure: Get creative with Elsa and Anna!  This interactive video features stories, dancing, singing and games. Enjoy this adventure as a family.

Free Activity Kits: These activity kits are geared towards family fun! Included are items from a variety of community organizations and City locations that will for sure bring some family fun – crafts, games, activity sheets and more! All you need at home is scissors, glue and coloring tools.

Activity Kit Crafts and Activity Book: Watch the videos presenting several crafts plus a family-friendly activity book.  If you receive an Activity Kit, the supplies to make the crafts will be in the kit!

Virtual Mixed Media Painting Workshop: Presented by the Arts Council of New Westminster, create your very own Owl using mixed media painting techniques with local community Artist Merril Hall.  This project is suitable for any skill level and uses common materials found at home. Merril will guide you through each stage of the process, with lots of examples.

Follow the instructions in this video starting February 13.

Supply List: 1 piece of watercolour or heavyweight paper (8.5X11” or larger, pencil, crayons, pastels, permanent markers, watercolour paints, water container, paint brushes, masking tape and salt.

Virtual Finger Knitting Workshop: Every reader needs a bookmark or two!  The New Westminster Public Library will teach you how to make your own finger-knitted bookmark at home.
Video instructions will be available here starting on February 13 or you can use the following instructions: 

Supply List: A long piece of yarn or string (approximately 10 feet is recommended) and your hands. No needles required!

DIY Gratitude Jar: Leading up to Family Day weekend, a gratitude jar is a great way to give thanks and share positive thoughts about your family. What are you most grateful for?

  1. Find a jar or glass, paper that can be cut into small pieces and pens
  2. Set them next to each other in a place where you will easily see the jar
  3. Ask your family to add to the jar by writing down what they are grateful for
  4. On Family Day, read through all of the positive things as a family

Bonus: Use coloured pens and paper, decorate the jar or cut the paper into shapes like hearts. Have fun with it!


Virtual Science World at Home: Join Science World as they present some of their favourite demonstrations streamed direct to your home. Air pressure, chemistry, the physics of moving objects, and the science of sound are all featured in this fast moving, fun collection of their most popular science activities.

Choose your own Adventure Scavenger Hunt: Breaking news! Youth Services holds the key to the city and it has gone missing! We are looking for private detectives to help us get the key back.  Register by phone or online to receive a free detective kit that will be filled with all of the information you need to solve the case. Then venture through the city scanning QR codes to collect clues to help you find the key!  All participants will also be entered into a draw to win a grand prize. The case is open to solve from February 13 – 15, so pick a time that works for you.  A cell phone with data capabilities is necessary to participate in this activity.

Virtual Quarantine Kitchen: Century House, in partnership with Save-On-Foods is pleased to present a fun and inclusive Family Day edition of Quarantine Kitchen - cooking with Guy Bureau of Coming Home Café fame. Guy along with special guest, Fadi Odeh from The Great Chocolate Showdown will be presenting a fun, inclusive family baking experience on Sunday, February 14 at 2:00 pm. The will also be a musical performance by local drag queen, Peach Cobblah!   Follow along and to make a delicious scone recipe. Fifty participants will be provided with a kit with all the ingredients to make the delicious scones. You can still participate without a kit by watching the show or using your own ingredients. Virtual Wow Magic Workshop: Join magician Paul Albertson for a Fun One Hour Live-Online Magic Workshop on Monday, February 15 from 10:00 - 11:00 am. He will teach 3 magic tricks, using supplies you can find around your home. Register now, space is limited! Fraser River Discovery Centre at Home: The Fraser River Discovery Centre is excited to continue to share its newest FRDC@HOME program series: Sit Spots! Check out their website starting on February 13 and get ready to discover a new way to appreciate and observe our amazing watershed! The Fraser River Discovery Centre is also open all weekend! Virtual Indigenous Story Telling: Presented by Spirit of the Children Society, join Ernie Cardinal as he tells shares the traditional plains story Fire In the Heart. A story of two young braves racing to become chief that shares the importance of community, family, leadership and responsibility.

Jigsaw Puzzle Video Game: The New Media Gallery will use photos from the New Westminster Archive to create a jigsaw puzzle video game and provide a fun tutorial that teaches you how to program your own video game puzzle using Unity. The Family Day Video Game Puzzle will be at the following link on February 15:

Photographic Treasure Hunt: Combine the sleuthing skills of the whole family and explore the history of New West even deeper with a photographic treasure hunt. Read clues and comb over every detail of historical photos for hidden web links that will take you to even more photos and clues. Can you make it to the end? Virtual Dance Party: Groove and move at home with a dance party hosted by Rock' n' Beau!  This fun, interactive and high-energy dance based party is fun for all ages. Learn some new dance moves and make memories as a family.

Try-it Registered Group Fitness: Try a fitness class with a family member (14 yrs +). These free classes will take place on Monday, February 15. Pre-registration is required and registration will be begin online or by phone starting on Friday, February 12 (2-days ahead for non-residents, 3-days ahead for residents) by phone or online.

Virtual Jazz Dance Class: Join Kathleen Carlsen (known to most in New Westminster as Miss Kathleen) who will be teaching a Family Jazz  Dance. This session includes a short warm up, stretch and fun choreography that is great for all ages. Make sure you have room to move. Kathleen teaches a wide variety of dance classes at Centennial and Queensborough Community Centre.

Virtual Zumba Class:  Join Janice Stevens who will be teaching a Family Zumba fitness class - enjoy the music and movement in this class while getting a great work out.  This class is great for ages 7 years and older, but anyone can participate and groove to the sounds. Make sure you have room to move. Janice teaches many forms of Adult dance and fitness classes at Centennial and Queensborough Community Centre.

Family Fun Registered Pickleball:  Play Pickleball at Queensborough Community Centre on Monday, February 15th with your household family. Participants are permitted to play 1v1 indoor Pickleball. Nets will be provided, but please bring your own equipment. Pre-registration is required and registration will be begin online or by phone starting on Friday, February 12 (2-days ahead for non-residents, 3-days ahead for residents) by phone or online.

Nature Trails Family Challenge: New West Family Place loves to celebrate ALL families! Take part in this fun yoga challenge set up at each of the locations in the Nature Trails Booklet below. Share photos of you and your family of choice posing throughout New Westminster – a chance to visit our green spaces, challenge your body, and connect with your family bubble in a safe and fun way!

Hidden Gems and PAWfect Walks: Explore the hidden gems of New Westminster, visit one of the many dog-off leash areas with your special friend, or explore a new location on a PAWfect walk with your dog while exploring the city. Check out the links below for some ideas. The Queensborough Knitters have also added something very special to Ryall Park in Queensborough. The Cozy Hug Walk art installation can be found near the entrance of the Queensborough Community Centre.

Family Favourites Photos Contest: Share a photo of your favourite family place and enter to win! Enter by commenting with a photos on the contest Facebook post. Contest closes February 15, 2021 at 11:59 PST.

Heritage Puzzle Contest: Vote to decide New Westminster’s favourite photo from the Archives! Each person who votes gets entered for a chance to win a custom-printed puzzle of the most-voted image. Families who post images of their Family Day weekend activities to social media and tag New Westminster Museum will receive a second entry into the contest.
