We are excited to introduce the Shine Bright New West holiday campaign. Residents, businesses, and community organizations are encouraged to collectively light up the city with bright and festive holiday light displays on homes and storefronts. 

Shine Bright and unite in the spirit of the season while respecting the current Public Health Orders.

Please note: Until further notice, gatherings or socials of any kind are not permitted. Activities included as part of this campaign should also be done with your immediate household or core bubble. Non-essential travel to New Westminster is also not recommended right now.

Holiday Light Displays

Register your Light Display:

Do you have an exciting light display at your storefront and home? Register your display today by completing the online submission form.

Check out the following link for an interactive map featuring a variety of light displays throughout the community. 

New Holiday Displays:

We are excited to share that the City has partnered with several community organizations to add new lighting displays this year! Each light display is featured on the Light Display Map.

Hyack Square: In partnership with the Downtown New West BIA, we are excited to offer an interactive, innovative light display.

Downtown Area: The Downtown New West BIA also added several other featured light displays as part of Shine Bright Downtown.

Queensborough Community Centre: Welcome to a winter candy land! In partnership with the Queensborough Special Programs Committee, check-out this fun display located on the north side of the building.

Queensborough Community Centre Entrance: At the entrance of Queensborough Community Centre, the City’s Queensborough Horticulture Staff Team has created a beautiful holiday train display made out of recycled materials.

Port Royal Park: In partnership with the Queensborough Residents Association, this special display named Community Together includes a tree in tribute to the essential service workers of New Westminster and ornaments decorated by Queen Elizabeth Elementary School students. 

Three Selfie Stations: Each selfie station features a different lit holiday motif including a snowflake, star and ornament. Perfect for a special photo! Find a station at Queensbrough Community Centre, Sappterton Plaza and on 6th Avenue next to the Public Library.

Shine Outdoor Activities

Self-Guided Walking Routes: 

To help you discover a variety of light displays, we have included several self-guided walking route tours. Please use the filters on the Light Display Map to find a suitable walking route. Don’t forget to check out the featured walking route in the Downtown Area, as part of Shine Bright Downtown.

Holiday Light Gam​es:

While exploring the lights around the community try one of the fun games below and hunt for different festive lights. Print or view these PDF's on your mobile device as you are out walking.

Community Christmas Trees:

Help get the Christmas season off to a bright start! The community is invited to help decorate designated trees (outdoors) at Century House, Centennial Community Centre and Queensborough Community Centre. Come by and hang your simple ornament or inspiring quote. Please note ornaments cannot be returned.

Shine At-Home Activities

Free Take-Home Celebration Kit: 

The kits includes holiday-themed activities, family oriented crafts, and child focused giveaways. The celebration kit has everything a family needs to enjoy the holiday season. All you need at home is scissors, glue and coloring tools. Registration for a pick-up time slot is required. Check availability and book your time online or phone.

Holiday Sing-along: 

Join us as we sing-along to favourite holiday songs with New Westminster’s own, Elizabeth Irving. The sing-along video will be available on the City of New Westminster Facebook page on Sunday, December 13 at 11:00 am. The sing-along can also be viewed on the Telus Optik Community Channel 345 until the January 4th. Participate from the comfort of your home with your immediate household or hold a virtual caroling event online with your friends and family. 

Holiday Games: 

A variety of holiday games that can be played virtually using an online platform such as Zoom or Facetime, or play with your immediate household at home.

Printable Activities:

The activities below can be printed and completed in the comfort of your own home. All you need is colouring tools!

Story Time with Santa

Watch Santa read us a classic holiday tale on the Telus Optik Community Channel 345 from December 22 – January 4. Santa in Sapperton is brought to you in partnership with Sapperton Business Association

Support Local

Remember to shop close to home and support local businesses in New Westminster.

Search Local:

Head to www.investnewwest.ca for a searchable directory that will help you find different local business options. The Downtown New West BIA has also published a Holiday Gift Guide featuring local shops that offer online shopping with delivery or curbside pickup. 

Gift Certificates:

Purchase a gift certificate from a local business from the comfort of your home by using the Support Local BC Website, which features 19 New Westminster businesses.  

Support Local Makers and Artisans:

New West Craft has published a Holiday Gift Guide featuring over 40 local makers and artisans.

Give Back to the Community:

If you are able to, there are also many local community organizations and charities that need support. The Sapperton Residents Association has organized a donation drive and are collecting donations to make 35 gift hampers for the Elizabeth Fry Society. They are collecting hats, scarfs, socks, candy, treats and coffee gift cards until December 18th. Please email for more information.
