As part of the WALK30 Challenge, Mayor Patrick Johnstone is hosting a weekly Walk with the Mayor. Join the Mayor to walk different neighbourhoods in New West and chat about the City, the weekly theme, and more. Walks will take about an hour, rain or shine! No registration is required, just show up at the starting point at the appointed time.
Week 4: Community Connections (Jane's Walk)
Jane Jacobs was a writer and activist who advocated for mixed-use development and bottom-up urban planning. She's credited as one of the inspirations for "New Urbanism," which promotes walkable neighbourhoods with a variety of housing and job types.
On May 6, meet at 2:00 pm in front of Save-On Foods in Sapperton. As this is Jane’s Walk weekend, the walk will be to Hume Park and back, and speculate on what Jane would have thought about Sapperton, as a human-scaled mixed use neighborhood.
The there-and-back route is approx. 3km with some grades, mostly accessible except for a short grass slope.
