Pop up Home

City of New Westminster

Submission Deadline: August 1, 2017 at 4pm PST

Budget: $4500.00

Location: 290 East Columbia St, New Westminster

2017 marks the 150th anniversary of Confederation in Canada. This offers a chance to reflect on Canada's history, look to the future, and embark on an exciting new chapter for the country. Many activities are being planned for the New Westminster community to commemorate and participate in this milestone.

As part of the Canada 150 anniversary, the City of New Westminster will be bringing together a collection of cultural projects centered on the concept of “Pop up Home”.

The intent behind this program is to engage artists, residents and visitors in conversations surrounding the theme of “Pop up Home”. Home exudes more than a place where we sleep, eat and keep our belongings. Home can be a place of belonging, where safety, security and identity are upheld. At a time of increased immigration and displacement, home might be a new and challenging place. Home may also be on unceded territories. Houses, community spaces, neighborhoods, rivers, mountains, cities and countries are all a part of home.

The City of New Westminster is soliciting proposals for images in response to the theme “Pop up Home”. The call for submissions invites proposals for work that reflects on, and creates a dialogue about the notion of home and belonging.

The successful artist or artist team will be responsible for the research, creation, production and installation of the work. The selected artist or artist team is encouraged to work with the local community to inform their process. The selected artist or artist team will have access to the City of New Westminster Archives and Museum collection. The work will be installed and exhibited from September 15 to November 15, 2017 along the glass wall of the Brewery District building located at 290 East Columbia St in Sapperton, New Westminster. A photo of the site is attached to this call.  An iteration of the work will also be exhibited as part of the Canada 150 exhibition at the New Westminster Museum in November, 2017.

The total budget available to artist(s) team is $4500.00 Artwork budget must be inclusive of all costs, including (but not limited to) artist fees, studio overhead, equipment, production, travel, transportation, all taxes and general liability insurance. The City of New Westminster will be responsible for the fabrication and installation of the artwork.
