About New Westminster Emergency Telecomms

New Westminster Emergency Telecommunications is comprised of a group of volunteers and City of New Westminster staff. Most of the volunteers are members of the New Westminster Amateur Radio Club and are licensed amateur radio operators.

In emergency situations and disasters, when many other telecommunication systems fail, a reliable means of communication has been emergency radio communications. Emergency radio is a public safety lifeline that links the community in crisis to a relief and support network, which aids in the protection of critical infrastructure.

The City of New Westminster invests in the latest radio equipment and provides its volunteers and staff with the necessary training. This training involves participating in community events such as the Hyack Parade, regional exercises such as Exercise Top Hat and international exercises such as the ARRL Field Day.
