Queensborough Substation

The City of New Westminster Electrical Department is building a new electrical substation at 886 Boyd Street which will result in some added traffic in the vicinity as well as construction noise. There will be heavy traffic from August to September 2019 as well as February to March 2020. In addition, there will be significant construction on the property from April 2020 to September 2021.

CONSTRUCTION DISRUPTION

We thank you for your patience during this necessary work. We will endeavor to minimize disruptions; however, given the nature of the work, some disruption is inevitable. Traffic concerns are being monitored closely and will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Traffic detours will be in place if necessary to allow safe movement of vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and transit and to ensure the safety of construction crews. Please continue to follow directions from traffic control personnel.

BACKGROUND

Queensborough currently receives it’s electrical supply from the City’s other substations which cross the Queensborough bridge. Given the anticipated load growth in the area as well as the reliability concerns, the City has decided to build a new substation to service the Queensborough area. This new substation will also provide some additional back-up capacity to the rest of the City.

The design was broken down into 3 phases, with an anticipated completion for fall 2021.

  • Phase one – Pre-Loading
  • Phase two - Construction
  • Phase three – Testing & Commissioning

PHASE ONE - preloading
Complete

Pre-loading of the site commenced on August 2019 and was completed August 2021.

PHASE TWO
october 2021 - October 2022

The construction of the substation has commenced and is anticipated to be complete by October 2022. During this time, there will be some significant construction noise levels at various points. We thank you for your patience during this time.

PHASE THREE – testing and commissioning
November 2022 - December 2022

The testing and commissioning of the substation is anticipated to take approximately 2 months to complete. There might be some minor service interruptions during this time to ensure that the new substation is safe and reliable. Further communication will be provide to affected customers at that time.

We will endeavor to minimize disruption as much as possible. However, as with any construction project, some disruption is inevitable.
