Following the pilot period to test the pole-mounted lights in the Moody Park off-leash dog area, staff are pleased to announce that the lighting will become a permanent feature.
What's Happening
The Moody Park off-leash dog area (OLA) has been selected to pilot lighting from October 2023 through March 2024.
In order to test how lighting may improve use of the OLA in the fall/winter months, a new utility pole light with two light fixtures will be installed along the western boundary of the OLA. The location of the new utility pole meets the following criteria:

Provides light in both the small/shy dog area and all-dog area;

Close proximity to existing electrical service;

Allows access for large equipment; and
-
Avoids conflict with existing trees and critical root zones.
The installation of the new lights will include a photocell allowing them to turn on from dusk-to-dawn. The pilot period will run from October 2023 through March 2024. At the end of the pilot period, staff will evaluate next steps.
Background
Lighting can help park visitors feel safe and comfortable and can extend the use of off-leash areas, especially in the fall and winter season when days are shorter.
The People, Parks & Pups Strategy (2022) identifies lighting as a high-priority "Special Amenity" and recommends lighting be considered on a case-by-case basis and evaluated in consideration of feelings of safety, surrounding land use, ecology, existing utility infrastructure and costs.
