Sapperton Field Lighting Upgrades
Replacement of the existing sports field lighting with energy-efficient LED system to provide improved lighting for field users.

Update - PROJECT is COMPLETE

This project is now complete and fields are open for bookings.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

The existing sports field lights and poles will be replaced with a new lighting system. The new LED lights will be more energy-efficient and provide better light quality and coverage, while minimizing glare and light spillover. This project will also support implementation of the City's Advanced Metering Infrastructure.

The following project impacts are expected:

  • The soccer field and baseball diamond will be closed during construction. The remainder of Sapperton Park will remain open, including the washroom building, playground, and picnic area.
  • Alternating one-lane closure on Sherbrooke Street lasting for up to one week will be required. Affected residents and businesses will be notified once the dates are confirmed.
  • Temporary construction fencing and existing chain link fencing will secure the site. Residents and park users can expect to see large equipment within the project site during construction.
  • A portion of the work will occur near trees under the supervision of a project arborist; no tree removals are planned with this project.

PROJECT SCHEDULE AND WORK HOURS

The anticipated project schedule is posted below. However, this work is highly dependent on weather and onsite ground conditions and project dates may change. Schedule updates will be posted here.

Start of Construction June 11, 2024
Completion fall 2024

Typical work hours will be Monday to Friday 7:00 am – 5:00 pm. Some work may be required after 5:00 pm and on Saturdays, later in the project, and will be in accordance with the Construction Noise Bylaw No. 6063, 1992.

LIGHT IMPACTS

Proximity to residential buildings and minimizing glare and spill lighting beyond the fields has been a key consideration of the planning and design of the project. The following methods will reduce impacts on park neighbours:

  1. Limiting design light levels to recreational/amateur play, i.e. the lowest recommended light level of sports lighting;
  2. Specifying an LED lighting system that is designed to minimize offsite glare and spill lighting;
  3. Specifying luminaires with extended glare shields and visors; and
  4. Installing taller sports poles for better lighting cut off and glare control (luminaires are aimed more downward) to reduce spill lighting and to ensure that the International Dark Skies Association (IDA) Criteria for Community-Friendly Outdoor Sports Lighting is met.
  5. Measuring on-field light levels as well as off-field glare and light trespass levels to ensure that the system meets the Dark Skies criteria as intended.
