Queen's Park Habitat Building Renovations

What’s Happening

After the Phase 1 implementation of  the Queen’s Park Farm Transition Master Plan (adopted by Council in 2023) was completed in the summer of 2024, the Phase 2 implementation, the Habitat Building Renovations, will commence in May 2026. The proposed renovations will transform the former barn into a year-round community amenity space designed to host classes, programs, and community events.  The space may also be booked for private events.

Project Timeline

Queen’s Park Habitat Building Renovations is anticipated to be complete by Fall 2026.

Project Background

The Queen’s Park Farm Transition Master Plan includes a phased approach to transitioning the former petting farm into a year-round space that supports nature, outdoor programming and community activities.  The project aims create a lasting base of environmental literacy, stewardship, and connection to local biodiversity and habitat.

Phase 1: Completed Summer 2024

City staff collaborated with land-based artist Dr. T’uy’t’tanat Cease Wyss (Skwxwu7mesh, Sto:lo, Hawaiian, Swiss), as well as Indigenous youth artists and creators, to weave undulating Coast Salish forms called Hugelkulturs into the landscape to restore the soil and create habitat.

Other improvements included:

  • Native plantings
  • Installation of nurse logs and logs inoculated with Shiitake mushrooms and Hen of the Woods
  • Creation of a wetland ecosystem
  • Addition of a new wood boardwalk
  • Renovations to the outdoor pavilions

The cost to implement these Phase 1 improvements in 2024 was $100,000.00

Phase 2: Building Renovation

We are now starting implementation of Phase 2 of the Master Plan, the transformation of the former farm building to community amenity space.
