UPTOWN PLAZA AND SIXTH STREET PUBLIC REALM IMPROVEMENTS

February 17th to August 2025

Project Details

Please be advised that the City of New Westminster’s contractor, GPM CIVIL CONTRACTING, is scheduled to commence the Uptown Plaza and Sixth St Public Realm Works. The primary extents of the project are on Sixth Street, from Sixth Avenue to Belmont Street, and Belmont Plaza (located on Belmont Street between Sixth Street and midblock to Seventh Street). It will also include improvements to the west side of Sixth Street between Princess Street and Sixth Avenue.

Pedestrian sidewalk detour

A temporary sidewalk detour is in place for pedestrians heading southbound on Sixth Street. This detour will remain in effect until approximately August.

The sidewalk closure is necessary to support underground utility upgrades at the intersection of Sixth Street and Belmont Street, where multiple services—such as gas, water, sewer, and electrical—are being upgraded. The work involves large equipment and ongoing vehicle activity in a limited space.

To ensure a safe route for pedestrians, a clearly marked detour has been provided around Belmont Plaza. Additional signage and surface improvements are in place to guide pedestrians through the area.

An alternate option for southbound pedestrians is to use Sixth Street East and reconnect with Sixth Street West using the newly installed temporary crosswalk past Belmont Street.

Thank you for your understanding as we complete these important public space upgrades.
