Metro Vancouver is constructing the Annacis Water Main North in Burnaby and New Westminster to increase the delivery of high-quality drinking water to growing communities south of the Fraser River. The new water main is approximately three kilometres long and 1.8 metres in diameter. It will run between 12th Avenue in Burnaby, and Auckland Street in New Westminster.

Work will begin with the New Westminster Section, which extends from 10th Avenue to Auckland Street. The New Westminster Section is two kilometres long and will take approximately two years to complete. Construction will take place mainly along 11th Street and 13th Street, between Auckland Street and 10th Avenue. ​

• During construction, eastbound traffic will be detoured. Westbound traffic will be maintained through the work area with assistance from signage and traffic-control personnel.
• Transit buses will continue operating, and emergency vehicles will be permitted through the work zone
• On-street parking within the construction area will be restricted during working hours.

The Carnarvon Street Watermain Replacement Project will replace aging water infrastructure along Carnarvon Street between Eighth Street and Tenth Street.

Construction Impacts

• Construction will begin September 17 with utility locates.
• The work will start at Eighth Street and move towards Tenth Street with single-lane alternating traffic along Carnarvon Street and at intersections.

Project Overview:

This project will upgrade an existing pathway along the southbound side of Howes Street between Ewen Avenue and Boyd Street, replacing it with a multi-use pathway that improves connectivity and safety for pedestrians and cyclists. This new pathway contributes to a larger initiative to improve active transportation opportunities throughout Queensborough and connect the residential and commercial areas divided by the Highway 91A Queensborough Connector.

At the Boyd Street intersection the new pathway will tie-in to the upgraded Boyd Street multi-use pathway constructed by the City of New Westminster. 

The project includes:

• 4 metre wide multi-use path
• New lighting
• Drainage enhancements
• Improved pedestrian and cyclist crossings

Pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained throughout construction.

The Queensborough Bridge Renewal Project has officially entered its active construction phase this spring. Crews have begun critical work to enhance the safety, reliability, and structural longevity of this essential Highway 91A crossing. This comprehensive rehabilitation includes resurfacing the bridge deck with a high-performance concrete overlay, replacing aging deck joints, and upgrading the drainage system. These improvements are vital for maintaining a structure that serves nearly 88,000 vehicles daily, ensuring it remains a robust link between New Westminster and Lulu Island for decades to come.

To minimize disruptions for commuters, the majority of the work is being performed during nighttime hours. Motorists should expect lane closures between 9:30 pm and 5:00 am on weekdays, and until 9:00 am on weekends. During these windows, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction, and a 3.5-meter width restriction will be in effect for oversized vehicles. While these nightly patterns will continue through the summer before pausing for the winter season in November, pedestrian and cyclist access will remain open throughout the project. We appreciate the community’s patience as we work toward a projected completion in fall 2027.
