A cultivar of Sweetbay magnolia, this tree is distinguished by more upright growth (narrower shape), fuller flower, and better cold hardiness – a helpful trait with our recent history of mid-winter freezes. Also semi-evergreen, perhaps even fully evergreen on the West Coast, waxy leaves may also improve this tree’s performance compared to other magnolia species during the dry summer conditions being experienced in New Westminster.
