Megan’s Place Playground, Conceptual Design.
What's happening?
To enhance the play experience for toddlers (1 - 3 years), Megan’s Place Playground in Ryall Park is being renewed. Aging play features are being replaced with exciting new classic and nature-based elements. The playground was originally built in 2012 in memory of three-year-old Megan Gunderson, who was tragically killed in a hit-and-run incident in Queensborough in 1996. The playground will continue to honour her through its name, and the preservation of the commemorative plaque and wood shed.
New features will include:
- Play tower, playhouse, and play panels
- Zig-zag boardwalk and wood play logs
- Mud kitchen and boulders
- Meandering stone pathway through plantings
WHY IS MEGAN’S PLACE PLAYGROUND BEING RENOVATED?
The renovation of Megan's Place is necessary as some of the play equipment has reached the end of its usable life.
WHEN WAS THE COMMUNITY CONSULTED ABOUT THE RENEWAL OF MEGAN’S PLACE PLAYGROUND?
In 2024, the Parks Department consulted with the Queensborough Residents Association and the Queensborough Special Programs Committee through in-person and virtual presentations. We also sought feedback via email from several area based organizations such as:
- YMCA childcare at QCC
- Queensborough Middle School
- Queensborough Middle School and PAC
- Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar
- Queen Elizabeth Elementary School and PAC
- Gunderson Family members
WHERE ARE THE ALTERNATIVE OUTDOOR PLAY AREAS NEARBY?
Nearby play areas include the following:
- Ryall Park (which includes three other play areas, a spray park, and large open lawn)
- Sukh Sagar Park (703 Ewen Avenue)
- Old Schoolhouse Park (500 Ewen Avenue)
- Queen Elizabeth Elementary School (outside of school hours, access the play areas from the front of the school. 921 Salter Street)
Should you have the option to travel a bit further, playgrounds are also located at:
- Port Royal Park (215 Salter Street)
- Redboat Park (250 Holly Avenue)
- Thompson’s Landing Park (west end of South Dyke Road)
Additionally, Recreation Services are planning to schedule toddler-focused activities at the Queensborough Community Centre during the playground closure. Indoor Playland will be offered on Saturdays in July and August, more information will be available in the Active Living Guide.
SCHEDULE:
Construction is anticipated to begin on April 8, 2025. The playground aims to reopen in August 2025.
During this period, the park entrance highlighted in orange on the map below will be closed. Please use the alternative entrances indicated in red.
The Parks Department is committed to minimizing the duration of the closure and will provide regular updates on the project's progress on the project website. We appreciate your patience as we work to improve the park.
