E-Bike Sharing

Shared Micromobility

E-Bike Share has launched in New Westminster! Beginning in August 2024, Lime Technology will be operating a fleet of shared e-bikes in the City of New Westminster.

Shared e-bikes will be available to rent from designated shared micromobility parking areas throughout the City and can be returned at the end of the trip to any designated shared micromobility parking area.

The service in New Westminster is operated by Lime Technology Inc. The operator is responsible for fleet maintenance, rebalancing, responding to complaints relating to improperly parked e-bikes, administering a discounted-pass program, and answering inquiries.

  • Shared micromobility systems are fleets of small, lower-speed human or electric powered vehicles for personal transportation. They can include shared bikes, e-bikes, and electric kick scooters. At this time, shared e-bikes are the only type of shared micromobility device operating in New Westminster.

  • An e-bike sharing system facilitates a low-carbon, active mode of transportation, connecting people with public transit, local shops, civic facilities, and public parks. Bike sharing systems help reduce the reliance on private automobiles for travel within cities, allow for convenient connections to public transit, and provide access by bike across a community, without the upfront cost of bicycle ownership or worry of bike theft.

  • Shared e-bikes can be rented through the Lime Smartphone App, or via text-to-unlock. Once the device is unlocked, it can be ridden on city streets, in bike lanes, and on multi-use paths, and then returned to a designated parking area at the end of the trip.

  • A trip on a shared e-bike can only end in a designated parking area. By creating parking areas for these devices, we can ensure that sidewalks and public spaces remain clear of devices that impede mobility and accessibility. Creating parking areas also helps ensure predictability of the location of the e-bikes.

  • Shared e-bikes should be ridden with the same level of care and diligence as any motor-assisted cycle. The rules of the road must be followed as they would be on any bicycle.

    • Riders must be age 18+
    • Helmets must be worn
    • One person per e-bike (No doubling up)
    • Don’t drink and ride
    • Follow all Provincial and Municipal rules

  • Slow zones are areas of the city where the Operator has geo-fenced a speed limit for the shared e-bikes that is lower than the speed the e-bikes can normally travel at. Slow zones help ensure the safe operation of e-bikes in areas with mixed bike and pedestrian traffic.

  • All stations are now operating and service is being provided across New Westminster
