Sunday, November 2—Daylight Saving Time-related reminders
Road safety is a shared responsibility. As we approach the season with less daylight hours, a reminder to please do what you can to stay safe:
- If you will be walking in the dark, consider wearing light coloured or fluorescent clothing, or attach a light or a reflective strip to your clothes. Stay alert: don't assume cyclists and drivers will see you. Try to make eye contact with all nearby cyclists and drivers before stepping out into the street.
- If you will be biking in the dark, ensure you have reflectors and lights attached to your bike. Do not assume drivers and pedestrians see you, especially at intersections and share pathways. Use your bell to notify pedestrians that you're approaching and slow down on shared pathways. Take special care when approaching crosswalks or intersections.
- If you will be driving in the dark, stay alert and don't be distracted by activities that take your mind off driving or your eyes off the road. Remember you are operating a vehicle that can cause severe harm to vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists. Take special care to watch for and stop for people when making turns at intersections.
Need a new pedestrian reflector? Come to New Westminster City Hall and pick one up at our info desk, while supplies last. Reflectors should not be badly scratched or damaged for maximum efficiency—this is a perfect time to replace yours if you need a new one.
