New Westminster – The City of New Westminster is providing an update following a significant apartment fire at 905 Fourth Avenue that began Friday afternoon. The fire has displaced an estimated 150 residents, with New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services (NWFRS) crews continuing to extinguish remaining hotspots. Emergency Support Services (ESS) volunteers are assisting affected residents, while the New Westminster Neighbourhood House is coordinating community donations.

At approximately 1:30 pm on Friday, July 10, NWFRS responded to a First Alarm apartment fire at 905 Fourth Avenue. Upon arrival, crews encountered multiple units on fire with residents trapped on balconies. Firefighters rescued several residents using ground ladders while simultaneously attacking the fire from inside the building and assisting with evacuations.

The fire was quickly upgraded to a Third Alarm response, with mutual aid provided by Burnaby Fire Department and the call-out of off-duty NWFRS personnel. At the height of the incident, eight fire apparatus, including two aerial trucks, were on scene.

"The response to the fire demonstrates the very best of our community," said Mayor Patrick Johnstone. "On behalf of Council, we are incredibly grateful to the firefighters, paramedics, police officers, emergency volunteers, City of New Westminster staff, neighbouring fire departments, and community partners who came together so quickly to support residents during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with everyone who has been displaced, and we remain committed to helping them through the days and weeks ahead."

Firefighters brought the fire under control at approximately 2:30 am on Saturday, July 11. While the main fire has been contained, crews continue to extinguish remaining hotspots using large volumes of water. An excavator has been brought to the site to help crews safely access difficult-to-reach areas, and firefighters are expected to remain on scene throughout the day.

"Our crews did an amazing job under extremely dynamic conditions," said Fire Chief Erin Williams. "Burnaby firefighters worked side by side with our crews throughout the incident, and we're incredibly grateful for their support. We also appreciate the offers of assistance from neighbouring agencies, including Vancouver Fire Rescue Services. Our hearts go out to the residents who are experiencing this devastating loss. We are working closely with our Emergency Management team, Emergency Support Services volunteers, and the Province to help residents however we can. I also want to thank our community for its incredible outpouring of support."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The affected apartment building contains 42 units. As a precaution, a neighbouring apartment building of approximately 20-30 units was also evacuated. It is estimated that 150 residents have been displaced. Two firefighters and one resident were transported to hospital by BC Emergency Health Services with injuries. All residents have been accounted for.

Emergency Support Services volunteers established an emergency reception centre at Century House on Friday evening and coordinated transportation in order to provide immediate support to evacuees. 18 volunteers, including members from Delta and Vancouver, as assisting with support efforts. They actively assessing needs of displaced residents and are providing resources for lodging, clothing, and groceries.

"Emergency Support Services volunteers have worked tirelessly to ensure residents have access to the essentials they need during an incredibly stressful time," said Cory Hansen, Manager of Emergency Management. "As residents begin planning their next steps, our focus remains on connecting them with resources and supports while working alongside our community partners."

New Westminster Neighbourhood House is coordinating community donations for residents affected by the fire. Financial donations and gift cards provide the greatest flexibility to meet individual needs. Monetary donations can be sent by e-transfer to . New or gently used clothing and shoes, and gift cards (preferably in smaller denominations), can be dropped off at Lord Kelvin Elementary School gymnasium, 1010 Hamilton Street (access from Seventh Avenue). Donation hours will be:

• Saturday, July 11, 1:00 – 5:00 pm
• Sunday, July 12, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
• Monday, July 13, to Friday, July 17, 4:00 – 8:00 pm

UPDATE July 12:

Due to the overwhelming generosity of the community, the donation centre is at capacity for clothing and shoes. Collection is on hold until further notice. Once items have been sorted and needs assessed, if there are any gaps a call-out will be posted for specific items. Thank you to everyone who donated. New Westminster Neighbourhood House is continuing to accept cash, gift cards, and e-transfers.

Residents living near the incident are advised to keep windows closed while smoke remains in the area. The area surrounding 905 Fourth Avenue remains closed to vehicle traffic. Members of the public are asked to avoid the area to allow emergency crews to continue their work safely.
