Skating lessons
Skate with enthusiastic, energetic, creative, caring instructors who make lessons fun and challenging!
Lessons are available for everyone 2½ years to adult with small class sizes.
Lesson plans incorporate ideas of movement, physical literacy, and "Fit for Life", and utilize a perimeter line around the ice called the “Pathway to Success”. During lessons, instructors lead participants on laps around the Pathway to practice skills, as increased movement has been proven to improve skating outcomes.
First Day of Lesson Tips
- Arrive early to allow time to get ready, especially if you are renting skates.
- Pick up your nametag from our friendly staff as you enter the lobby.
- Rental skates are not included in your registration. Please see our front counter staff to pay, or come in ahead of time to buy your rental pass!
- Caregivers are not allowed on the ice other than specified Adult and Tot Lessons.
- For safety reasons, we ask that a guardian stay in the facility during the child’s lessons.
What to Wear
- Helmets. These are mandatory for all skating lesson participants. A limited number are available to borrow at Moody Park Arena free of charge.
- Warm Clothing. Wear gloves and a warm sweater or jacket for lessons. Snow or rain pants are very helpful to keep tots warm and dry.
- Skates. Rental skates are available at Moody Park Arena. If you wish to purchase your own skates, please feel free to consult with one of our instructional supervisors for advice on what type is best for you. We recommend hockey or figure skates. We strongly advise you to avoid adjustable size skates, and skates with buckles. Proper ice skates will make learning to skate easier and more enjoyable. Don’t forget – new skates need to be sharpened and we will do the first one free!
Registering for skating lessons
Participants may only register for one lesson set at a time to ensure prerequisites are met as well as to provide fairness and availability of lessons. If you are presently enrolled in lessons, your results will be posted in your online account's Activity Outcome section after the second to last lesson.
If you do not have a prerequisite on your account, please come to a public session to be assessed for free. If you have taken lessons elsewhere, you can contact Moody Park Arena with your report cards which can be assessed to provide a prerequisite. Call 604.525.5301.
Avoid registering in a level below what you think is correct due to not having a prerequisite. We may not be able to accommodate moving to the appropriate level once lessons start. Please contact the Arena ahead of registering.
