  • Facility Updates

What we've updated and pending updates.

    Last update October 11, 2024.

Since the phased opening of təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre on April 29, we’ve collected several messages with your comments and feedback.

We’re listening! Below are the most common issues raised and what we are doing to address them.

Over the next few weeks and months we will continue to address deficiencies and make adjustments to our processes. However, some changes will take longer than others to put in place and we ask that you remain patient.

    COMPLETED CHANGES

    1. Limited Water Pressure - We’ve increased the water pressure in the change room and on-deck showers!
    2. Parking - Lines in the first parking lot have been updated where possible. Our second parking lot is now open!
    3. Room Temperatures - Most issues with balancing the air temperatures in rooms throughout the facility have been addressed and we are continuing to be monitored and tweaked.
    4. Cleaner Change Rooms - We have monitored the use of the change rooms and adjusted our staffing schedule to improve cleanliness. We will continue to monitor this.
    5. Change Room Showers - Temperatures have been adjusted.
    6. Adjustable Depth Portion of the Lap Pool - Now that our bulkheads have been installed our adjustable height floor and accessible stairs in the shallow end are ready for use. This area is available for lane swimming, water running, and shallow aquafit. Additionally, there is now more space for swimming lessons and aquafit classes. Ongoing training of staff for bulkhead transitions is taking place.
    7. Check-in for Sports & other Drop-in Programs - We’ve added a card system for drop-in programs and are evaluating as we go. Cashiers and Sport Attendants are being trained to make check-ins more efficient. This process is being evaluated over the coming months as we look to better support drop-in sport programs.
    8. Personal Storage - There are plenty of free lockers in the universal change space by the pool but we’ve heard the request for additional spaces to store or place personal items. Hooks have being added to the back of change room stalls and doors and a water bottle shelf by the sauna.
    9. Deck showers - Cold water now available! You can now cool off after a hot tub, steam, or sauna.
    10. Slide - We now have a tot slide in the leisure pool.

    CHANGES COMING SOON

    1. Change Room Signage - New change room signage is on its way and will be replaced under warranty due to a defect causing fading.
    2. Accessible Ladders - Custom off the wall accessible ladders are being made for the middle section and deep end of the pool. This include standing high railings and wide steps. Estimated arrival date: late November.
    3. Sauna - It’s going to get hot in here! We’re waiting on a new part that will keep the temperature at the correct set point. The part is on backorder.
    4. Shower Shut offs - We are having issues with some showers not turning off. This is due to shower valves not being able to be isolated. Parts are on the way.
    5. Shoe Racks - We have temporary shoe tracks in place while something more permanent is being sourced.
    6. Benches - We are looking to see if additional benches can be installed in the change rooms.
    7. Scales - We have two scales on order for the fitness centre and pool deck.
    8. Sauna Clock - A clock for the sauna is being ordered

WHAT WE CAN’T FIX QUITE YET

    1. Water Fountains - Due to the limited wall space, we are looking at the feasibility of adding a water fountain system near the sauna and steam room.

Thank you for your help and understanding as we settle into our new facility.

If you have feedback, please email

    Will the pool(s) use chlorine?

Yes. A pre-swim shower helps to eliminate perspiration, body oils, and bacteria from entering the water. When you wash away the impurities, the chlorine in the pool doesn’t have to work as hard, leaving the water cleaner and the air we breathe fresher.

Lessons for all ages and abilities

Please note: With the opening of təməsew̓txʷ Acquatic and Community Centre this year, Hume Park and Moody Park Outdoor Pools will not open this spring and will resume regular opening dates from July to early September. The outdoor facilities will operate at full capacity for leisure swims and swimming lessons in July and August, alongside lessons at təməsew̓txʷ.

    About the Curriculum:

The step by step progressions teach:

    • Strong rotational skill to learn to get in and out of breathing position.
    • How to find balance in the water to produce less struggle.
    • Practice techniques to create strong muscle memory.

    About Breaking Waves:

The Breaking Waves Swim Program teaches children to progressively and successfully learn to swim. Customer feedback, years of staff experience, and current information around the science of swimming are build into the program.

Students experience success through progressive skill development in a positive and supportive learning environment. The program

    • Creates a beneficial learning environment. Lessons run at times with limited competing programs.
    • Invest in our instructors. Knowing that a program is only as strong as the deliver, instructor's receive professional development throughout their career with us.

    About Assistant Program Coordinators:

There is always an Assistant Program Coordinator available to assist parents or students in any way needed. They provide:

    • Customer Service
    • Develop staff skills and knowledge
    • Ensure program consistency.

    Registration Information

    • Lesson participants can only register for one lesson set at a time. This ensures customers meet all level prerequisites and have the best possible experience.
    • Not sure what level to register into next? You can conveniently check your online account by going to My Profile > My Info > Activity Outcomes. This grade determines what level is next. Grades are viewable the morning of Registration Day. Registration opens at 8:30 am.
    • Late registrations: Participants must be registered by the third class.

    Unsure of swim level?

Free swim evaluations are offered during any of our Public Swim times. One of our lifeguards will be happy to do an assessment of your child which takes approximately 5 minutes.

Upon completion of the assessment you will receive a piece of paper with the assessed level which you must bring to the front desk to register.

  • Red Cross Lesson & Swim for Life Transfer Chart

Transition your lessons to or from another municipality.

Many local municipalities, such as Burnaby and Coquitlam, follow the Red Cross swim program which differs from the New Westminster swim program you may be used to.

We recommend contacting the facility you are registered with, especially if a child has not been swimming for a while, to confirm all necessary requirements. Swim assessments may be required, and are available at no cost for most programs, to ensure you are registering for the correct level. To get started with your transition, please see the chart below.

What is my New Westminster swim level? You can find your recommended New Westminster swim level in your online account by going to My Profile > My Info > Activity Outcomes.
