Our Community, Our Way

BACKGROUND

The New Westminster Public Library was recently renovated to address the aging infrastructure and the growing and changing library services demands. Over 250,000 people were visiting the library every year, borrowing over 600,000 items, with a greater diversity in the use of library spaces and community needs.  The much-needed renovations resulted in facility infrastructure, building performance and systems upgrades such as replacement of all HVAC ducting and accessibility upgrades to washrooms and public areas.  In addition, public space improvements include a new technology learning centre, a quiet study and meeting room, a dedicated teen space, expanded seating capacity, and more efficient public service desks.

Through the Public Art Policy, funding was also set aside to commission public art to enhance the experience for users of the Library.

A Call to Artist was issued in 2022 seeking a professional artist or artist team to create an artwork in any medium. Local artist, Rain Pierre was selected by a jury through a request for qualifications process.

The artist was given flexibility and time to develop his concept for the Library. The artist engaged with the community and Library users through a call for submissions to inform the final project. Participants were encouraged to submit drawings that reflect what community means to them (LGBTQ2S+, reconciliation, equity, environmental protection, recovery, etc.). Find details about the call for submissions here.

about the artwork

Rain Pierre and his Rain Awakens team have created an artwork that spans both floors of the New Westminster Public Library Main Branch. The artwork features 19 concrete pillars wrapped with vinyl graphics and a carved maple wood panel with epoxy resin fill.

Visitors to the Library will find pillars throughout the building wrapped with colourful vinyl graphics. The artwork, "Cooperating through the Clouds" by Alex and Maddox, as well as artworks by Zoya Lykova, Kaiden Khan and Wendy Schmidt submitted through a community competition were selected and incorporated into new designs for the pillars.

Pillar graphics feature 9 distinct designs referencing themes of inclusion, environmental stewardship, resilience and determination.

The installation includes a feature piece installed on the 2nd floor. Visitors are greeted with a vibrant laser cut wood panel representing mother earth coming to life, a reminder that the land is a living, breathing, spiritual force that we need to care for and protect.
