Catch Basin Marking Program

Coming Spring 2026!

Help Protect our Local Waterways!

Catch basins, also referred to as storm drains, carry untreated water – and any pollutants – directly into streams, rivers, and oceans. By painting a yellow fish symbol next to a catch basin, we create a visual reminder that what goes down the drain affects our local water and wildlife.

The City’s Catch Basins Marking program is in partnership with Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), and adapted from their Storm Drain Marking program. The goal is to:

  • Educate the community about the connection between catch basins and waterways.
  • Encourage proper disposal of hazardous and household waste.
  • Foster community involvement and stewardship through hands-on activities.

By painting a yellow fish next to a catch basin, you help prevent pollution, educate your neighbours, and protect local ecosystems.

Want to help out? Borrow a kit and help us paint the authorized yellow fish symbols on the road beside catch basins!

  • Do I have to use the stencil? Why can’t I freehand a drawing of a fish?
Although we would love to see your artistic ability, this isn't the right opportunity for freehand drawing. To effectively spread public awareness and understanding, consistency is key. This will ensure the symbol is immediately recognizable across the city, no matter who painted it.

How can I help without going out to paint on storm drains?
By learning about your local water supply, waterways, and aquatic habitats, you'll be better prepared to help protect them. Ensure you're always disposing of hazardous household waste correctly; everything that empties into a catch basin eventually ends up in fish and wildlife habitats.
