Meter Obstructions
The installation phase of the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) project is set to begin in September 2024. The electrical meter(s) on some properties across the city are currently obstructed. To ensure the City’s electrical meters are replaced as efficiently as possible during the AMI project deployment phase, owners or occupants will need to remove any obstruction on or near the electrical meter in compliance with Electric Utility Bylaw No. 6502, 1998, section 30.
The City’s contractor will need one (1) metre of unobstructed access in front of the meter and clear access around the meter to perform the necessary installation. Examples of obstructions include custom-built enclosures, large shrubs or bushes, fences, home renovations that have affected access to the meter, etc.
Please note: Failure to remove a meter obstruction may result in delayed meter replacement and possible radio-off charges being added to your utility account.
If you are uncertain about what is required or unsure about how to remove the obstruction, please contact Electrical Operations at 604-515-3750 or ami@newwestcity.ca for assistance.
After you have cleared the obstruction, please contact the City by email at ami@newwestcity.ca including a photo of the clear meter and your address. Alternatively, you may call 604-515-3750 to inform us that the obstruction has been removed.
If you are a tenant and you receive an obstructed meter letter in the mail, please inform the property owner or your landlord of the notification and the information it contains.
Removing Obstructions
There must be enough space around the meter, meter base, and meter ring to exchange the electrical meter. As a general guide, if the meter base cover can be removed, there is likely enough space for the meter ring to be removed and the meter to be exchanged. Note, if you have a meter cover / panel, it should be easily
removable or hinged.
Acceptable Examples
Proper framing around the meter base is not impeding access to the meter, meter base, and meter ring.
Meter cover that is easily removable by removing screws.
Unacceptable Examples
House siding or panel cover is preventing access to meter, meter base, and meter ring.
