National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

September 30 is recognized across Canada as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It is a time to honour the Survivors of the Residential School system, remember the children who never returned home, and stand with families and communities who continue to feel the intergenerational impacts of colonial policies.

For Spirit of The Children Society, Truth and Reconciliation Day is not only about reflection but also about action. Our gathering creates space for:

  • Honouring Survivors and Families – Through the voices of Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community leaders, we acknowledge truth and uplift the resilience of those who endured.
  • Celebrating Culture and Identity – The powwow, artisan vendors, and Indigenous foods showcase the beauty, strength, and continuity of Indigenous traditions.
  • Community Learning and Healing – By coming together—Indigenous and non-Indigenous—we create opportunities for dialogue, education, and collective healing.
  • Walking Together in Reconciliation – Truth must be acknowledged before reconciliation can be lived. This event reminds us that everyone has a role in building a more just and respectful future.

Wearing orange shirts symbolizes the message that Every Child Matters, and it reaffirms our shared commitment to ensure that no child is forgotten, and every voice is heard.

At Spirit of The Children Society, we believe reconciliation is an ongoing journey. This day is an opportunity to listen, to witness, and to walk together in respect, healing, and unity.
