Bike rack installed in Mayor’s parking spot

New Westminster – The Mayor invites you to park in his spot. Cyclists to New Westminster City Hall can now park their bikes in the Mayor’s parking spot. Located at the rear entrance to City Hall, the bike rack can hold 6 bikes.

“New Westminster’s Master Transportation Plan has established an ambitious goal for local transportation trips so that by 2031 50% of all trips will be made by walking, cycling and taking transit. This would increase to 60% of all trips by 2041. These figures represent a 25% increase from today’s sustainable transportation mode share in our city,” said Mayor Jonathan X. Coté, who uses these sustainable modes himself most days. “I would like to encourage more visitors and staff to travel by bike to City Hall and having a bike rack in this convenient spot will help to facilitate our goal."

The installation of the bike racks coincides with Bike to Work Week, and Mayor Coté hopes the change will encourage people to leave their single occupancy vehicle at home and give sustainable modes of transportation a try.

“It’s good to have more bicycle parking, especially here at City Hall,” said Councillor Patrick Johnstone Chair of the ACTBiPed Committee. “Visitors are more likely to take their bike somewhere if it can be secured somewhere safe.”

Installing the necessary infrastructure to support sustainable modes of transportation is part of the larger Master Transportation plan, which has a target of half of all local trips to be taken by walking, cycling, or transit by 2031.
