New Westminster — At approximately 5:30 pm on Wednesday, January 2, 2019, a 64-year-old male was found unresponsive at the Canada Games Pool. Lifeguards on duty immediately removed the man from the pool, called 911 and initiated CPR until first responders arrived shortly thereafter. The facility was then cleared of the public and closed for the remainder of the day. First responders performed CPR and transferred the man to hospital, where he later passed away.
Following the incident, a critical incident stress debrief was held with facility staff involved and rides home provided. A follow-up debrief will also be held with all staff who were present and ongoing support will be provided.
Canada Games Pool is open today with regular hours. As a normal part of our routine following any incident in our facilities, a full review of our protocols will be conducted. We extend our condolences to the friends and family of the deceased.
