Few relationships in classical music carry as much weight—or as much mystery—as that of Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and Clara Schumann. Their bond, built on deep admiration, artistic kinship, and unspoken love, shaped some of the most intimate and powerful music of the Romantic era. In this special concert, the Academy Chamber Players explore that legacy through the lens of song and chamber music.
The program begins with selections from Schumann’s and Brahms’s lieder—music of inward poetry, tenderness, and human vulnerability—performed in intimate combinations of voice, piano, and strings. The afternoon culminates in the fiery depth and grandeur of Brahms’s Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34, a work of symphonic force and haunting intensity. Comprised of exceptional faculty from the Vancouver Academy of Music, the Academy Chamber Players bring together some of the city’s finest performers in a flexible ensemble that honours both artistry and education. This performance offers a rare opportunity to experience their insight and passion in a program shaped by devotion, influence, and musical dialogue.
