Origin of Saint Mary's Park
On May 13, 2015, the Park was opened on the former Saint Mary’s Hospital site which also accommodates the new École Qayqayt Elementary School. The Saint Mary's Hospital legacy can be seen in the 'first-aid crosses' stamped into the upper walkway recognizing 100 years of medical assistance and care. Saint Mary’s Park was designed with significant community feedback and involvement.
Playground
Saint Mary’s Park includes a children’s playground with structured and passive play areas. The colourful playground surface is made from recycled tires with support from the BC Tire Stewardship Program and the Province.
Community Garden
Saint Mary's Park offers a purpose built community garden with 20 plots, of which, four are dedicated to the food bank. The community garden offers gardening opportunities to both the school and community and is managed by the New Westminster Community Garden Society.
In addition, the park is surrounded by blueberry hedges, wild strawberries and 20 Espalier fruit trees.
