Mini Enchantments

Artwork Statement

Mini Enchantments is inspired by the interconnectedness of nature within urban areas of the Lower Mainland, including New Westminster. The mural features six insects that are native to this area, each playing a role that extends far beyond its small body.

Pollinators like the Bumble Bee and Cabbage White sustain the plant life that feeds entire food chains. The Woolly Bear Caterpillar breaks down organic matter, returning nutrients to soil. The Damselfly and Water Strider signal the health of local waterways, and the Painted Lady, a long-distance traveler, connects this place to a broader migratory web.

Together, these creatures form an invisible infrastructure. Mini Enchantments is an invitation to look closer at what already shares this ground with us.

Located next to Ronnie Dean Harris’ 2019 mural Salmon Arrows, the mural touches on shared themes of interconnectedness and valuing our surrounding ecology.
