Mercer Stadium track re-opens for public use
New Westminster, BC – The track at Mercer Stadium has re-opened for public use. Replacement of the track surface was a key part of Mercer Stadium improvement works that began in August 2010 and included the installation of a new track along with construction of storage facilities for the many sports groups that use the Mercer site. The artificial turf field has remained open throughout the project.
“While there are still a few incidental tasks to complete, we wanted to re-open the track to the public as soon as we could,” said Dean Gibson, Director of Parks, Culture and Recreation. “Unpredictable weather throughout the spring and early summer hampered efforts to complete final surface and line painting work but the sunny weather over the past several weeks has allowed the contractor to substantially complete work at the site.”
The track at Mercer Stadium is a valuable community asset and is regularly used by many New Westminster residents as part of their physical activity routine. The total investment for the improvement project is $2.085 million with partial funding provided by the Federal Government through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada program.
