New Westminster launches video streaming coverage of council meetings

New Westminster, BC – Live, video streaming coverage of city council meetings is being launched in New Westminster. Accessible through the city website (www.newwestcity.ca), the new service enables citizens to view council deliberations live or on-demand. Video streaming coverage will commence at 3pm Monday, September 12th with the City of New Westminster Council Committee of the Whole meeting, followed by the Regular Meeting in council chamber at 7pm.

“We’re very pleased to introduce video streaming coverage of our council meetings for the citizens of New Westminster,” said Acting Mayor Bob Osterman. “It’s a great tool for staying on top of city business and providing greater transparency in how decisions are made that affect our community.”

The City has contracted with Neulion, one of Canada’s leading providers of video streaming service for municipalities. In addition to New Westminster, other cities using Neulion’s solution to provide greater transparency and accessibility in local government include Vancouver, Surrey and Burnaby and the Resort Municipality of Whistler.

To access live or on-demand video coverage of council meetings, web users can go to the City of New Westminster website home page (www.newwestcity.ca) and simply click on the “Council video coverage” button. Users will then be given the option to select video coverage of council meetings in progress or meetings that have already taken place.

“Engaged citizens are key to successful communities,” said Osterman. “With this new service, we hope to foster civic engagement while providing opportunities for our citizens to learn more about important city initiatives from start to finish.”
