New Westminster’s Westminster Pier Park wins another award
New Westminster -- On April 25, 2014, the British Columbia Parks and Recreation Association awarded their Parks and Open Spaces Award to Westminster Pier Park, making it the eighth award the park has received since its opening on June 16, 2012.
The Parks and Open Spaces Award exemplifies the value that recreation services and innovative facilities have on the high quality of life in communities. The award takes into account key design elements such as accessibility, environmental protection and the benefits to the community, and also recognizes the value and need for community engagement to ensure public and stakeholder input and acceptance.
“I’m proud that Westminster Pier Park has been recognized yet again for its innovation, beauty and added value to our growing community,” said Mayor Wayne Wright. “It’s rewarding to see visitors and residents alike enjoying the park and seeing how it has enhanced livability in our downtown.”
The City of New Westminster is now exploring public art, design and programming features for Timber Wharf (east) section of the Park. In addition, the Westminster Pier Park Pedestrian Overpass connecting the park to the Front Street Parkade at Fourth Street has commenced with a projected fall completion.
