City of New Westminster’s Parks, Culture and Recreation Department receives award for an innovative program that connects youth and seniors through art

New Westminster – On April 25, 2014 the British Columbia Parks and Recreation Association awarded their Program Excellence Award to New Westminster Parks, Culture and Recreation for the innovative Heart 2 Art program offered through Century House and Youth Services.

The unique Heart 2 Art program focuses on bringing youth and seniors together to encourage shared growth and understanding through art. To foster intergenerational creativity and learning, art ‘Pods’ pair a senior, a youth and a professional artist together to share their views, skills and creativity to develop an art project in five selected mediums: spoken word, theatre, mosaic, digital photography and variety.

“Congratulations to the Parks, Culture and Recreation department for enriching the lives of our community’s youth and seniors through this important program,” said Mayor Wayne Wright. “It’s great to see the generations developing relationships with each other and being united through the common interest of art.”

The Heart 2 Art program has enjoyed unprecedented success, demonstrating excellence in program design with great potential to be adapted to other communities.
