City of New Westminster to hold launch event for new, open-access fibre network powering innovation and economic growth

New Westminster – The City of New Westminster invites residents and businesses to join in the launch of BridgeNet on June 21st. BridgeNet is a City-owned open-access fibre optic network currently being installed connecting commercial centres throughout the city, a foundational component of New Westminster’s Intelligent City initiative.

“The benefits of dark fibre are wide-ranging, affecting a broad spectrum of industries and improving connectivity for residents and businesses in a multitude of ways,” said Mayor Jonathan X. Coté. “Affordable access to broadband fibre provides a fertile field for connectivity, innovation, and economic growth.”

The City of New Westminster is currently finalizing agreements with internet service providers (ISPs) to lease BridgeNet fibre and provide reliable, fast, high capacity broadband at competitive prices  to businesses and residents in high-rises. Several ISP representatives will be on hand at the launch to discuss their services and offerings. The launch event will also feature a panel of industry professionals who will discuss how the community will benefit from access to gigabit internet.

“BridgeNet is a key part in our efforts to become a leading intelligent city,” said Councillor Bill Harper, Co-chair of the City of New Westminster’s Intelligent City Advisory Committee. “Through BridgeNet, New Westminster is laying the groundwork needed to create a sustainable climate of innovation, and build a competitive and healthy community for citizens.”

The BridgeNet launch event will take place on Tuesday, June 21st at 5 pm. Registration for the event is available below:
