New Westminster, BC – On Thursday, March 8, 2018, the City of New Westminster and Community Living Housing Society (CLHS) broke ground at 43 Hastings Street to signal the start of a new affordable housing project to be developed at the site. CLHS was the successful proponent for the project after the City released a request for proposals for innovative housing projects at two City-owned sites, one of which was 43 Hastings Street.

“The start of the 43 Hastings Street project is a major milestone in the City’s commitment to housing affordability,” said Mayor Jonathan X. Coté. “We’re thrilled to have CLHS on board and look forward to the development of this project to help address housing challenges that many in our city face.”

Community Living Housing Society is a New Westminster based non-profit society who, with support from the BC government, will own and operate the development. The development will include three fully accessible one-bedroom units for people with developmental disabilities, rented at income assistance shelter rates, and three below market rental three bedroom townhomes. CLHS clients are primarily adults with developmental disabilities who receive social assistance and supports provided in home and through CLHS programs.

“CLHS is excited to undertake this innovative housing project with the support of Community Living Society (CLS), the City of New Westminster, BC Housing, and Vancity,” said Ross Chilton, Chief Executive Officer of CLS and CLHS.  “The project is small in scale but will prove to be large in its social impact.”

The Province is providing a grant of approximately $314,000 and construction financing of about $864,000.

“People are struggling to find safe, secure, and affordable housing in New Westminster. This kind of partnership will make sure more people have access to housing options that work for them,” said Judy Darcy, MLA for New Westminster. “I know these homes will be very important for the people who will call them home—and for our community as a whole.”

Construction of the project at 43 Hastings Street is expected to start on March 12, 2018.
