The City of New Westminster has announced that the Q to Q pilot ferry service will be extended between the Quayside and Queensborough neighbourhoods. The extension of the ferry service will commence on Monday, October 29, 2018, until May 2019. Hours of operation will be Monday to Thursday, 6:00 am to 9:00 am, and 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm; Friday, 6:00 am to 9:00 am, and 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm; and weekends and statutory holidays, 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.
“The 2018 Q to Q pilot ferry service was a tremendous success and feedback from the community has been very positive,” said Mayor Jonathan Coté. “We have heard very clearly that this type of service is needed on a year-round basis to serve the needs of residents on both sides of the Fraser River.”
The Q to Q extended ferry service will depart from each dock approximately every 20 minutes. The ferry service will continue to be operated by Bowen Land and Sea Taxi who will deploy a 12-passenger water taxi capable of carrying two wheelchairs and four bicycles per trip. Both individual and monthly passes will be available. Individual tickets are $2 for full fare and $1 for concession, and monthly passes are $40 for full fare and $20 for concession. Children aged five and under are free. Three City facilities, including Queensborough Community Centre, City Hall, and Centennial Community Centre, and four River Market vendors will sell tickets and passes and all forms of payment will be accepted at these locations. Passengers can also purchase tickets on board using exact change.
“We have been very pleased with the positive response from the community towards the Q to Q ferry service. Between May and October 2018, over 50,000 passenger trips were completed,” said Lisa Leblanc, Transportation Manager for the City of New Westminster. “Providing a reliable, affordable, and accessible service that connects Queensborough to downtown New Westminster remains a high priority with the goal of establishing a long-term commitment to delivering the ferry service.”
The City of New Westminster is also seeking feedback from the public to help inform future phases of ferry operations. A short online survey is available at www.newwestcity.ca/qtoqferry and will be available until November 9, 2018. All feedback will be review by staff an analyzed in a report to be submitted to Council in December 2018.
